The Old College was originally built as a Neo-Gothic hotel in the 1860s to accommodate the growing number of Victorian tourists attracted to Aber with the arrival of the railway. The hotel didn’t last long though and by the early 1870s it had been established as the University of Wales where it remained the main campus until the Penglais site was developed in the 1960s.
The building is a local icon, looking more like Hogwarts than a university, but at the time of writing it is barely in use. The University still maintains the building, housing some administrative departments, and additional studio space for the School of Art, but there is much debate as to how to make use of its commanding position looking over Cardigan Bay. And, so far, it has resisted the rising waters of the Irish Sea.
